Microsoft Dynamics AX Helps Companies Maintain a Competitive Advantage

Tuesday, April 23. 2013

In an ever-changing global marketplace, companies are looking for every opportunity to gain a competitive advantage and simultaneously grow revenue, profits, and customer loyalty. Meanwhile, new regulatory requirements, competitive pressures brought on by an increasingly connected global economy, and technologies that “level the playing field” for companies of all sizes are making it more difficult to stay ahead of the competition. However, keep in mind that every challenge also represents an opportunity to beat out the competition.

ERP software - once considered a necessary commodity in the IT infrastructure - is now viewed as a strategic asset for organizations that want to be able to quickly adapt to change and accelerate business performance. Responding quickly to business needs can be the key to gaining and keeping a competitive edge. But inflexible IT systems can get in the way. An ERP system that is flexible and easy to use can play a critical role in helping your business achieve the agility it requires to compete and succeed.

Having one flexible, comprehensive business management solution can help you increase efficiency and reach by bringing together dispersed employees and operations, even when they operate in different languages and countries. It can also enable companies to gather fundamental business information from multiple departments or subsidiaries and analyze productivity, profitability, margins, and trends to help decision-makers understand current operations and resolve problems earlier and more easily.

By integrating business information throughout your supply chain, you can improve the flow of information and gain the insight you need to streamline operations and take advantage of changing conditions. The ability to define and manage items in multiple dimensions and track materials and goods throughout the product life cycle enhances inventory control and enables you to meet the information demands of customers and regulatory bodies. By increasing the flow of information internally and with trading partners, you can improve customer service, improve supply chain coordination, and take advantage of changing market conditions.

Microsoft Dynamics AX can strengthen your position in the marketplace and provide the backbone of an agile, flexible system that helps your business grow, adapt quickly to change, and take advantage of new business opportunities. Simple to use, straightforward to implement, and quick to adapt, Microsoft Dynamics AX can be delivered in the way that works best for your organization—via the cloud or on-premises. You can add staff, enter different geographies, launch new products, and pursue additional lines of business with the assurance that your IT system is there to support and help drive your strategic initiatives.

In each case, the Microsoft business platform makes it easy to personalize the experience and get it just right. By choosing the Microsoft platform, your company's devices and applications will truly work together - and these connected devices will give you the same version of the truth regardless of the device you are using.

Our IT customers are entering a new era - a new era for the way they manage and deploy applications and devices. Between the consumerization of IT and the move to the cloud, a lot of what IT provided, from deployment to systems integration, is being radically revised and simplified. Throughout this transformation, we are here to help our customers maximize the return on your IT existing investment and best position you for the future. Our goal is to enable people to use the devices they want to use in the places they want to work - while also enabling enterprises to protect corporate information.

Four IT Megatrends will Dominate the Next Decade

Thursday, April 4. 2013

Based on reports from industry analysts and the many conversations that our team has with clients, we believe four megatrends will radically change how businesses view enterprise IT over the coming decade.

  • Mobility and social are the driving forces for change in business today, particularly as employees (and customers) increasingly expect to use mobile and social technology to interact in new ways. These two elements are becoming a competitive differentiator for business - for recruiting and retaining employees and for attracting and retaining customers.
  • The cloud and big data are quickly becoming enablers for business success. The tremendous scalability and agility enabled by the cloud and the new insights made possible with big data can help businesses today get ahead of the competition and tap into new sources of revenue.

These trends represent not only what is most important to our customers today, but also what we feel are likely to be the dominant forces of change in the coming decade.

  • The proliferation of new device types, along with the connectivity of the cloud, is making us more mobile and changing the way we work and play. Mobility answers the growing expectation from your employees to be able to work from anywhere, with the device that they choose. Mobile technology also delivers a great mobile experience to customers, bringing your business to them wherever they are through their mobile phone or tablet.
  • As technology becomes more immersive, we also expect it to help us develop more personal and social connections with our colleagues and customers. Social networks build strong work communities, enhancing collaboration, information sharing, and productivity.
  • The connectivity that the cloud offers is changing what we expect from technology. With an always-on connection, apps can provide innovative new services with instant scalability and attractive economics.
  • While business intelligence (BI) has been important for a great number of years, the explosion in connected devices and apps is generating an exponential growth in data and the need to get better insights from “big data.” The challenge for today’s businesses is to make that data useful—to put it into the hands of their people to drive informed, forward-thinking decisions.

We’re not alone in identifying these megatrends. According to IDC, “In 2012, the ICT industry's shift to its third major platform of growth—built on mobile, cloud, social, and big data technologies—will accelerate.” In contrast to what IDC refers to as the first (mainframe) and second (PC/server) platforms, they estimate that by 2020, “…enterprises’ highest-value leverage of IT will be driven by these third-platform technologies as well as an explosion of new solutions built on the new platform and rapidly expanding consumption of all of the above in emerging markets.”

It’s amazing just how fast our world is changing today. Just think…

  • Within 15 years, a little startup named Amazon has gone from transforming the book industry to changing the face of retail.
  • It took radio 38 years to reach 50 million users. In less than nine months, Facebook reached 100 million users. And in the space of just a few short years, social networking services have significantly changed people’s expectations of how we interact with each other and with businesses, particularly for the millennial generation.
  • Within just two months of its launch, Kinect for the Xbox 360 changed the face of gaming and became the world’s fastest-selling consumer electronics device ever.

Each of these examples reflects the tremendous impact that the megatrends are having on our world - and the pace at which it is all changing. As we enter this new era in the enterprise, the question is - what can your business do to make the most of it?

Of course, technology trends on their own aren’t going to revolutionize your business or help you stay competitive. How you adopt new technology and put it to work in your business will ultimately be the responsibility of IT. We know how important it is to ensure that your technology solutions truly empower your IT professionals to deliver what the business needs. What are those needs?

  • Integrate new devices and applications with their existing line-of-business apps, for a seamless experience that keeps people productive and connected to the business.
  • Help maximize end user productivity, with solutions that put the tools users need at their fingertips, wherever they happen to be working from, and that connect them with the people, information, and content they rely on to do their jobs well.
  • Ensure that corporate data and resources are protected and secure, even as access to those data and resources becomes possible from an increasing number of devices and apps.
  • Fully manage all devices on the network, both local and remote - a task that is becoming ever more complicated as users bring more and more devices into the enterprise and work from more and more locations.

At Merit Solutions, our goal is to deliver ground-breaking technology solutions that empower IT to take advantage of the latest trends without compromise. By achieving this goal, we are able to provide your IT professionals with the tools they need to help you innovate and compete while meeting the core needs of the business in all new ways.

What Is Cloud Computing?

Wednesday, July 18. 2012
Cloud computing is a concept that really confuses a lot of executives today. The funny thing is that most of us already use cloud computing on an every-day basis. Hotmail, YouTube, Twitter, Bing, LinkedIn and Skype are all examples of cloud services most of us use on a weekly, if not daily, basis – we just don’t normally think of them as “cloud computing”.

Cloud computing can be formally defined as "a model of computer use in which services stored on the internet are provided to users on a temporary basis." As a confused CFO, CEO, or CIO – someone that’s out there that’s actually researching cloud computing and how it can benefit them - does that really help me out? I’m going to guess probably not.

So... what is cloud computing?

I think the best way that I've had cloud computing described to me is to think of consuming IT as a utility.

If businesses today consumed electricity the same way they consumed business software - like enterprise resource planning or customer relationship management - then every company, and every individual location, would have its own power plant. The power plant would require heavy up-front expenses so you can purchase generators and everything else you need for the power plant. And this is just so you can turn your business on every day. Then, at the end of their useful life, you would replace the whole thing again and start over with new generators and equipment - another heavy investment! Along the way, the power plant would need to be staffed by a team to maintain the generators and keep everything running.

So we know this isn’t how we all consume electricity. Instead, somewhere out there is a large power plant that is producing enough energy to power millions of homes and businesses - not just ours. We don’t have to worry about staffing the facility, maintaining generators, or performing equipment upgrades. The only thing we really need to be concerned with is paying the monthly bill on time. Otherwise, whenever we're at home or at work, we expect the power to be ready and working when needed. If it’s not, and we have a problem, then we call the power company and file a service request and hope the issue is fixed quickly.

And how does this relate to cloud computing?

Cloud computing is fundamentally about consuming IT as a utility. In our example, the power plant is your data center, and instead of giving you power, it provides access to your business systems and data. Just like our power plant concept, companies can preserve capital, free up resources, and achieve a quicker time to value by moving their business systems to the cloud.

You still receive your “power”, or access to your business software and data, but you’re not actually generating it and managing it yourself. You don’t need to staff a team to run your data center or upgrade your equipment. Instead, you work with a trusted Cloud Partner like Merit Solutions to host, maintain, support, and upgrade your systems. Just like your energy company, you receive a bill each month charging you for the amount of energy you used - which, in this case, is the number of users you have each month. In return, you are given immediate access to your business systems whenever and wherever needed. And, if you have a problem with the system, you contact your vendor, file a service request, and hope the issue is resolved quickly.

In this model, all organizations have access to the enterprise applications and systems that were previously only available to the largest companies.

About MAXCloud Cloud ERP powered by Microsoft Dynamics AX

Merit Solutions' Cloud ERP offering, MAXCloud, enables customers to take advantage of the industry-leading ERP capabilities of Microsoft Dynamics AX at a decreased cost - without the up-front investments in hardware and infrastructure. Unlike other Partners, Merit Solutions is not just a consulting firm, but is also an engineering and software application development firm that understands infrastructure and how to build IP. This provides clients with a high reliability factor from an infrastructure standpoint, and enables them to have a quicker, lower cost deployment without sacrificing quality.

And while there are Partners who are experimenting with Microsoft Dynamics AX in the Cloud and attempting to offer it in a traditional consulting model that takes 9-12 months to deploy, we have built software configuration tools and packaged services that not only increase the reliability of our cloud offering, but introduces a completely different model for how companies deploy and implement business software. As an example, we just helped an organization rapidly deploy MAXCloud in less than 60 days – with strong financial controls, systems, and processes in place to meet government regulations.

Security Concerns Preventing You From Moving to Cloud ERP?

Tuesday, June 26. 2012

One of the first questions that organizations contemplating a cloud ERP system often ask is, “Just how secure is our data?”

It’s a legitimate question, since entrusting private business data and applications to an outside hosting service makes some organizations uncomfortable. But the fact is data security is a legitimate concern no matter whether an organization subscribes to a Cloud ERP solution or licenses ERP software and implements it onsite. In any deployment model, ironclad safeguards need to be in place to ensure safety of critical client data.

If you are considering a new ERP solution, and security is your biggest concern regarding the cloud, ask yourself the following security-related questions. Are your answers better than ours?

  1. Is your production equipment housed in a state-of-the-art facility? An ideal data center should be secure, free of windows, and built with cement or steel fortifications. It should also be located somewhere that is not prone to inclement weather.
    • MAXCloud Data Centers are housed in state-of-the-art, multi-million dollar facilities with building fortifications. For example, our main Data Center is housed underground in a facility that is designed to withstand an 8.3 magnitude earthquake.
  2. Please describe your facility’s physical security arrangements. Are they in place 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and 365 days a year? Similar to a privacy policy, you should have well-defined and robust security arrangements that are in place at all times.
    • MAXCloud Data Centers maintain stringent physical security policies 24/7/365 - including armed security guard patrols and video surveillance monitoring with video storage for non-repudiation.
  3. Do you contract with an independent, third-party organization to conduct periodic external and internal vulnerability scans? In addition to maintaining an intrusion response system and a prepared response plan, you should frequently commission both routine and unannounced security audits.
    • MAXCloud Data Center perform rigorous internal vulnerability scans, log threats, and are audited for SSAE 16 Type 2 compliance.
  4. How often do you back up data, and where are the backups stored? You should have a rigorous program in place for data backups with offsite storage in a secure location remote from the main data center.
    • All MAXCloud ERP customers receive full nightly backups, which are stored daily in an off-site location and are maintained for 7 years.
  5. Do you offer full hardware redundancy to avoid the negative consequences of a power failure? Your company’s data center and backup location should have redundant power supplies, such as battery and diesel generator backups, to avoid the negative consequences associated with a power failure.
    • MAXCloud Data Centers have multiple power sources and redundant incoming lines provisioned in an N+1 configuration for continuous power. Our main Data Center’s backup generators can power a city of 25,000 people - which allows us to go off grid for 28 days without water, electricity, sewer, or natural gas feeds.
  6. Does your staff include a highly qualified operations team that monitors the site 24 hours a day, 365 days a year? You should have many certified experts on staff to provide technical support.
    • MAXCloud Data Centers are monitored 24/7/365 by operations staff and security guards. Clients also receive 24/7 technical support from certified industry and product experts.

By deploying MAXCloud ERP, customers can rest assured knowing their ERP system complies with the highest security and reliability standards at a dramatically reduced IT cost.

Are you considering a Cloud ERP solution? If so, sign up now for your very own risk-free, no-obligation 30 day trial of MAXCloud ERP. We will not ask for any credit card / payment information - we just require a business email address.

Rapid globalization, demanding customers and shareholders, and intense competition are challenging today’s organizations like never before. As a result, decision makers are increasingly looking to technology to overcome these formidable business issues. To maximize the business value of IT investments, organizations need to choose solutions, business models, and IT platforms that meet their business needs today and yet are flexible, agile, and forward-looking enough to meet their requirements tomorrow.

Welcome to MAXCloud ERP - the number one Microsoft Dynamics AX Cloud ERP solution for managing your business in the cloud.

Whether you need core Finance and Accounting software or end-to-end Cloud ERP business management solutions, MAXCloud ERP enables your people to access critical business data, from anywhere, at any time - with the click of a button - while improving competitiveness and speeding growth.

Implementing a new ERP solution is an investment in your business. And even though new ERP has been proven to add value, most companies fear taking away their “tried and true” ways of working. Employees are used to working in disparate systems, re-entering manual data, using Excel to “patch” gaps, and waiting for responses to business-critical information. We often overlook the cost-implications of these time-consuming tasks, and instead focus on “what’s worked for years”. And in our fast-paced world, time means money...

So how can you ensure that your ERP project delivers rapid value? And how do you maximize the return on that investment?

Next, you need to streamline processes and optimize the software - ensuring that your ERP solution meets all of your unique business needs. For this, you need to work with the experts - people with years of hands-on experience managing hundreds of ERP implementations - not just cheap software engineers and flashy sales representatives. You need a Partner that is committed to your success - a Partner that understands who you are, how you work, and what makes your company unique. And they need to be able to provide high value and high quality services. These are the experts you get when you work with Merit Solutions!

Missouri Life Sciences Company Chooses MAXLife Cloud ERP

    Wednesday, May 9. 2012
Merit Solutions is proud to announce that a Life Sciences company based in St. Louis, Missouri, has selected Microsoft Dynamics AX in the Cloud with Merit Solutions’ MAXLife Cloud software. Our client will use MAXLife Cloud to support rapid growth plans while maintaining an integrated, end-to-end ERP solution built for the Life Sciences industry.

Our client’s primary focus is to improve and preserve the long term health of individuals one patient at a time. To be successful in this regard, our client needed to utilize up to date information technology to better serve its customers. Prior to selecting MAXLife Cloud, our client was managing their business with spreadsheets and QuickBooks. Company data was located in fragmented silos of systems and machines, causing redundant manual processes and a duplication of effort. As the company developed an aggressive business model that included expansion plans, they needed systems that would improve visibility, streamline processes, and support exponential growth. For these reasons, our client began looking for a new ERP solution.

They ended up choosing Merit Solutions’ MAXLife Cloud because it is simple to use and deploy, is a comprehensive ERP solution that connects all departments with real-time information, and gives them the flexibility to grow, expand, and adapt as needed. MAXLife Cloud was the most cost-effective solution for the company because it works like and with familiar Microsoft technology they use every day. Connectivity and integration with Microsoft SharePoint and other products will enable them to maximize IT investments, minimize training, and increase user adoption. With MAXLife Cloud, our client will utilize integrated document management capabilities, enabling them to control access to business information, provide full versioning, and FDA compliance support. And by deploying MAXLife in the cloud with Merit’s RapidOn Implementation methodology, they can take advantage of lower costs, a more rapid deployment, regular updates, and secure data.

Benefits of Micrsoft Sure Step Online

    Wednesday, March 14. 2012
Microsoft Dynamics Sure Step is a customer lifecycle methodology for all Microsoft Dynamics solutions (AX, GP, NAV, SL, CRM and CRM Online). Besides delivering guidance, project management discipline and field-driven best practices, Sure Step also contains a huge collection of tools and templates to be used in all phases of a Microsoft Dynamics customer engagement.

Last autumn Microsoft announced Sure Step Online, which enables you to:

    • View the complete Sure Step methodology, including all tools and templates.
    • Create and manage customer projects based on the Sure Step deliverables on SharePoint.
    • Link to online marketing, training, and other resources on PartnerSource and CustomerSource

    Microsoft Dynamics Sure Step Online

Microsoft Dynamics Sure Step Online is a new approach to using the Sure Step methodology. Instead of having a client application with a set of content language packs, Microsoft developed a Silverlight application available on Partner Source and Customer Source. As the Sure Step Online is cloud-based, you no longer have to regularly download and install client or content updates (around 400MB for each language) to have the latest tools and templates, Sure Step Online will always contain the most recent content, and be available from anywhere, always.

Some of the advantages of the Sure Step Online include:

    • Using the latest guidance and content available online without downloading and installing the client.
    • Ability to access and share content quickly from anywhere. All you need to have is an internet connection, a browser with a Silverlight plugin and access to Partner or Customer source.
    • All supported languages are also available. Besides English, Sure Step Online offers (partial) methodology and templates in Chinese, Danish, French, German, Japanese, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, and Turkish.
    • Ability to point users to a specific guidance page or template, which will eliminate the need for them to download the whole methodology to locate the specific content/guidance.
    • Ability to create customer projects on your local SharePoint instance, partner hosted SharePoint or SharePoint Online. Projects created using Microsoft Dynamics Sure Step Online Project Wizard will always contain the latest templates.
Of course, if your prefer to do so, you can still download and use the “on-premise” Sure Step 2012 client with the latest language packs.

Sure Step Online is available for partners and customers on the following location https://mbs2.microsoft.com/SureStep

For more details, please refer to the Sure Step Online User Guide.

MAXCloud ERP Addresses Global Business and IT Trends

    Tuesday, November 15. 2011
Trends in the global marketplace affect the way organizations prioritize their investments and resources. These trends also define the expectations that business and IT professionals have for how their business systems will allow them to address these trends, respond to the challenges these trends present, and meet their business and IT needs.

Here are some key trends businesses are facing today:

    • Keeping pace with escalating competition and global expansion. New entrants with new business models change the pace of competition forcing organizations to adapt to new market conditions quicker.
    • Ongoing organizational changes through mergers and acquisitions make it difficult to run the whole business on one system.
    • Growing outsourcing and multi-enterprise value chains require increasing collaboration and transparency across multi-enterprise and offshore resources.
    • Meeting rapidly changing customer attitudes and demands without reducing profits.
    • Shifting patterns in global supply and demand driven by locally differentiated products and services.
    • Fluctuating workforce demographics that require flexible processes and systems and “anytime, anywhere” access.
    • Increasing regulatory oversight and corporate governance, including the need for transparency toward key stakeholders.

    IT trends include:

    • Growing challenge of keeping pace with trends and competition due to the complexity and inflexibility of legacy systems designed before the new millennium.
    • Escalating IT backlog and pressure on IT budgets that drives the need for ongoing governance and the rationalization, modernization, simplification, and standardization of IT systems and processes.
    • Expanding number of consumer devices, such as smart phones, tablet PCs, and social networking technologies that are available to support employee productivity.
    • Increasing need of IT to support growth and competitive advantage of organizations.

Organizations need new systems that will work for them–not against them!

    • Organizations need business applications to be an asset in the face of change. Not a liability.
    • They need simplicity and agility without sacrificing power.
    • Successful organizations need complete, packaged industry-specific solutions designed for their business or agency needs. Not inflexible software that requires customizations.
    • Organizations need powerful embedded analytics and business intelligence (BI). Not data overload.

These needs and more are met in MAXCloud ERP - by introducing a generation shift in the way we think about the ERP model, and providing that vision to a broader range of customers.
