Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) as a term was coined in 1990 by Gartner – but its roots date back to the 1960s as an inventory management and manufacturing control system. By the 70s, these systems had evolved into Material Requirements Planning (MRP) solutions for scheduling production processes.

In the 80s & 90s, MRP grew to encompass more manufacturing processes evolving to MRP-II or Manufacturing Resource Planning. Later, it expanded beyond inventory control to other office functions like accounting, human resources – setting the stage for what we know as ERP today.
